Tallahassee and Leon County leaders announced a plan Thursday to help more residents transition from septic to sewer connections. The proposal would improve the quality of life for these residents, pave the way for more development and help protect nearby water resources.

County Commissioner Bill Proctor says dependence on septic tanks can put homeowners on a tight budget in a difficult position.

“People are ashamed to talk about my septic tank not working. You don’t hear people talking about that. They will tell you that my transmission needs repairs, my heating has gone out, my air conditioning is not working. But no one goes around telling anyone my septic tank isn’t working,” Proctor said. “It’s kind of embarrassing for people, and when things like that happen, not everyone can reach into their pockets and deal with things like that.”

According to Proctor, connecting to the city’s sewer lines would help reduce unexpected repair costs. It would also reduce environmental concerns about septic tank spillage into nearby groundwater.

The plan would expand sewer connections to about 100 homes and several businesses within the Urban Services Boundary on Tallahassee’s Southside. The area known as the “Triangle” lies between Woodville Highway, Crawfordville Road and Capital Circle Southwest. Under the plan, the city would invest more than $10 million to expand canal infrastructure in the area. According to Proctor, the county will then work to identify grants to cover costs for individuals making the switch and will also focus on outreach and education.

“Packaging that information into bite-sized portions because people have heard of septic tank before and it costs $10-12,000. So we have to try to tell the community about it.”

Commissioner Proctor and Mayor John Dailey plan to submit the proposal to their respective commissions for discussion in the coming weeks.
